Young Australian Charged for Allegedly Placing Sticker Eyes on ‘Cast in Blue’ Sculpture

A teenager from the Land Down Under has faced legal proceedings after allegedly vandalizing a large blue sculpture of a legendary being by applying plastic eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, 19 years old, appeared via phone at Mount Gambier Magistrates Court in the state of South Australia on that day, facing with one count of property damage.

Officials commented at the time of the recent event, the local council explained that surveillance video captured a person placing artificial eyes on the artwork, which residents have nicknamed the “Blue Blob”.

Ms Vanderhorst did not enter a plea and informed the judge she was unwell, as reported by media sources, with the judge recommending her to secure a legal representative before her next court date in the final month of the year.

The following day the alleged incident, the local mayor said that restoration to the popular public artwork would be costly as the adhesive eyes could not be removed without damaging the sculpture.

“This intentional vandalism to a valued community art is unacceptable and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin remarked in mid-September. “It is not harmless fun, it is costly - it is also frustrating to those members of our society who have embraced Cast in Blue.”

She said the council would pursue the “significant” restoration expenses from those accountable for the damage.

When the sculpture was first proposed, it drew varied responses from the local community due to its cost and appearance.

Priced at A$136,000 (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; £68,000), the sculpture depicts a mythical megafauna, with the creators influenced by an prehistoric marsupial ant-eater found in local caves that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
