This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Leader.
Although not quite at the identical stature as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a first responder, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The craze became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
