The Red Devils Poised to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Steam at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
