The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series from Critical Role, revealed an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks amazing. However, I felt that an element was lost in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
