Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is best known for her pioneering work championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following achieving her goal, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She added that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the mission, including elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
Flight Details
The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the Kármán line of outer space.
The team of pioneers also comprised accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
