Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such medications must be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if something flipping and you become starving," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural support.
