The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode series written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The last series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived recently.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the background, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers watch the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor called being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the network announced on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
