Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Music Superstar and Cultural Figure, Dies at Eighty-One Years Old
The world mourns the loss of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican reggae singer and actor whose captivating voice was instrumental in spreading reggae music worldwide. He passed away at the age of eighty-one.
“It’s with profound sadness that I announce that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure episode and subsequent pneumonia,” wrote his spouse Latifa Chambers on social media. “I am grateful for his family, close friends, peers in the arts and colleagues who walked with him on his journey. To all his fans around the world, please know that your encouragement was his motivation throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” Her post was co-signed by their offspring, Lilty and Aken.
Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hit songs such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, “I Can See Clearly Now” and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His optimistic musical style and uplifting spirit brought him a vast and loyal fanbase.
In addition to his music achievements, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972’s crime drama “The Harder They Come”, a performance that was highly acclaimed and is viewed as a cornerstone of Jamaican cinema.
Jimmy Cliff was one of just a handful of musicians, including the legendary Bob Marley and other greats, to be honored with the prestigious Order of Merit from Jamaica.
