Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.

The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
