Former British Soldier Charged of Killing Kenya Woman Shows Up in Court

An individual has appeared in court as extradition hearings commenced in the investigation of Agnes Wanjiru, a Kenyan national, a Kenyan woman who was found dead near a British army base in 2012.

Purkiss, thirty-eight, who is hailing from Greater Manchester, showed up in the Westminster court on the last Friday, and informed the court he would challenge the extradition. Reports indicate that he was detained on Thursday night.

An arrest warrant for the defendant was authorized by a Kenyan court in Nairobi in the month of September. Legal prosecutors informed the Kenyan judiciary that Purkiss had been accused of a sole charge, of homicide, and that the Kenyan government would pursue his extradition to stand trial.

Purkiss served formerly as a army medic with the Lancaster Regiment, the military regiment for the northwestern England, including on missions to Afghanistan.

The victim, 21, a hairdresser who had a young daughter, went missing after a night on the town, and her remains was found 60 days later in the grounds of the accommodation where she had last been seen.

Nobody had previously been detained or charged in connection to her demise. Purkiss’s arrest followed a fresh police investigation, which followed a exposé in 2021 by the Sunday Times, in which the publication approached several current and former soldiers in the military group.

This inquiry has been headed by Kenyan detectives, which, under a mutual defense pact, retains jurisdiction in the case.
