A Prediction Market Participant Profited $436,000 from Wagers Predicting Maduro's Downfall.
A bettor made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was made public, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the event.
Changing Odds in Wagers
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the period preceding former President Trump declared on January 3rd that Maduro had been seized.
A particular user, which became a member recently and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a initial bet of $32.5K.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement
Trading information shows that users estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
But these probabilities had climbed to over 10% by the end of the day and surged in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in betting activity right before the social media post was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a trade based on inside information," commented a financial reform advocate.
Several of other individuals also made significant sums from bets on the same outcome.
Legal Questions Emerges
Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.
A new rule put forward on Monday seeks to ban government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
Market Background
Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to political events.
The industry faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.
Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
